On 08/03/2023, Chicago police officers responded to a shooting near South Jeffery Boulevard and East 71st Street in the South Shore neighborhood. Kyle J Eastes, 26, became involved in a street altercation with a 22-year-old man, who was shot in the torso during the confrontation. A nearby Walgreens security guard at 7109 South Jeffery Boulevard witnessed the incident. Authorities reported that the security guard, who also works part-time as a police officer at Cook County Hospital, fired at Eastes during the incident. Eastes was struck and transported to a hospital, where he died. Authorities reported one firearm was involved in the fatal shooting. The 22-year-old victim survived his injuries. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting.
