On 07/31/2023, members of the Ville Platte City Marshal's Office, Ville Platte Police Department, and other assisting agencies served arrest warrants at a residence in the 100 block of West Beauregard Street. The warrants were related to drug and firearm offenses. According to Louisiana State Police, 53-year-old Sistrane Edwards opened fire on the officers as they approached the residence. Deputy Marshal Barry Giglio was struck and fatally wounded during the exchange. Cynthia Soileau, 45, who was at the residence, was also struck by gunfire and critically injured. Officers returned fire, striking Edwards, who died at the scene. Louisiana State Police recovered a firearm and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Deputy Marshal Barry Giglio, 65, had served with the Ville Platte City Marshal's Office for nearly two decades after retiring from a career with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety. His death prompted an outpouring of support from law enforcement agencies across the state.
Following the shooting, 23-year-old Vonteeko Lamar Anderson was arrested at the scene. Prosecutors later charged Anderson with first-degree murder under Louisiana's felony murder statute, alleging that because he participated in the underlying felony that led to Giglio's death, he could be held criminally responsible even though Edwards allegedly fired the fatal shot. Anderson was also charged with attempted first-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and multiple firearm and drug offenses. Those charges drew attention because they relied on Louisiana's broad felony murder law rather than alleging Anderson fired the weapon that killed Giglio.
