On 07/25/2023, Jefferson County deputies stopped a man near Highway CC and Gamel Cemetery Road in Festus during a trespassing investigation. Deputies detained the man during the encounter. While law enforcement officers were present, the man shot himself. He died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities reported one firearm was involved. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
