OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 10/01/2023, Fayetteville Police Department officers detained Lawrence Artis at a Dollar General on Cliffdale Rd and placed him in handcuffs during a law enforcement response. While in custody and under active police control, Artis produced a concealed gun and shot himself. He was transported for medical treatment and later died from the self inflicted gunshot. Reporting noted the gun had been concealed on his person despite being handcuffed, and authorities later ruled the death a suicide that occurred during police custody.
