REASON FOR CHASE: Reportedly stolen vehicle

NARRATIVE: On 12/19/2025, Ewing Officer Edward Lester saw a Kia reported stolen and followed it before activating his emergency lights and siren. When the Kia did not stop, Lester pursued it, joined by Officers Charles Wyckoff and Jason Ulrich in two additional police vehicles. During the pursuit, the Kia ran a red light at Olden Avenue and Arctic Parkway and struck an uninvolved Subaru. A juvenile passenger in the Subaru was ejected and later died from crash injuries. The juvenile was a bystander, not an occupant of the pursued Kia.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office investigated the death under the state's Independent Prosecutor Directive and presented the case to a state grand jury. In August 2026, the grand jury voted not to file criminal charges against Lester, Wyckoff or Ulrich.
