OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/06/2021, Tyler Stow, 22, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during an approximately three-hour armed standoff with police on Olive Street in Mount Vernon. The standoff began at approximately 2:30 a.m. and ended around 5:00 a.m.
Police Chief David Hubert said the encounter followed an argument between Stow and his girlfriend. Police responded and attempted repeatedly to communicate with Stow while the confrontation continued.
According to Hubert, Stow became increasingly agitated during the standoff and fired multiple shots into the air. Police summoned a Special Response Unit after the gunfire. Witness Scottie Wilson described numerous officers arriving in tactical equipment and surrounding Stow’s truck with weapons drawn.
Approximately 15 law-enforcement personnel participated in the response, including officers from the Mount Vernon Police Department, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and Monett Police Department. Police continued attempts to communicate with Stow and resolve the confrontation without further gunfire.
At approximately 5:00 a.m., Stow fatally shot himself. No police officer fired the fatal shot. His death is classified as suicide under police duress because he died by suicide while surrounded by law enforcement during an active armed standoff.
