OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/22/2021, Ryan Steinbach, 36, of Fairfax, fatally shot himself during a New Ulm Police Department traffic stop in the 500 block of 7th Street South. An officer stopped Steinbach at approximately 8:13 p.m. for a vehicle-equipment violation. Two additional officers arrived shortly afterward.

Police reported that the initial officer suspected Steinbach might be impaired and attempted to investigate. According to police, Steinbach became combative during the encounter, produced a handgun and made suicidal statements.

Police reported that officers attempted to take the handgun from Steinbach and that he shot himself during the struggle. He was transported first to a local hospital and subsequently to a Twin Cities medical facility, where he died from the gunshot wound at 12:36 a.m. on June 23.

The involved officers were wearing activated body cameras, and the police vehicle camera system also recorded the encounter. New Ulm Police reported that the recordings were being analyzed. The New Ulm Police Department investigated with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
