OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/23/2021, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at approximately 3:40 a.m. to a reported domestic violence incident in the 19500 block of West Cookson Bend Road in Cookson. According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, a woman told Gray that police were being called, and Gray allegedly said to tell police he would begin shooting when they arrived.

Police alleged that Gray fired at deputies when they arrived. One deputy returned fire. OSBI reported that neither Gray nor the deputies was struck during that initial exchange of gunfire.

Gray then fled from the immediate area and hid while deputies searched for him. Deputies subsequently located Gray dead with a single gunshot wound. OSBI identified him as Jerett Gray, 23.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation investigated the death. The initial OSBI account specifically reported that nobody was struck during the earlier exchange between Gray and the deputy, establishing that the deputy’s gunfire during that exchange did not cause Gray’s subsequently discovered gunshot wound.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputy who returned fire during the encounter was not publicly identified in the records located.
