REASON FOR CHASE: A Lower Allen Township police officer attempted to stop Amézquita-Vazquez because the dirt bike he was riding did not have a license plate and was not registered for street use.

NARRATIVE:
On 04/06/2022, 20-year-old Jonathan Luis Amézquita-Vazquez of Harrisburg was killed when the dirt bike he was riding collided with a pickup truck at Gettysburg Road and Lower Allen Drive shortly after a Lower Allen Township police officer attempted to stop him.

At approximately 9:11 a.m., a Lower Allen Township police officer encountered Amézquita-Vazquez riding the dirt bike in the 2200 block of Gettysburg Road. Police said the officer attempted to stop him because the dirt bike did not have a license plate and was not registered for operation on public roads.

Police said Amézquita-Vazquez continued east on Gettysburg Road and traveled between other vehicles. Police alleged they discontinued the pursuit. The available public reporting does not establish the speed reached by either the dirt bike or the police vehicle or the distance over which the officer followed him.

Approximately one minute after the attempted stop began, the officer arrived at the intersection of Gettysburg Road and Lower Allen Drive and encountered the dirt bike after it had collided with a pickup truck. Witnesses told investigators that the pickup had entered the intersection with a green traffic signal and had the right of way.

Amézquita-Vazquez suffered fatal injuries. The Cumberland County Coroner’s Office subsequently identified him as 20-year-old Jonathan Luis Amézquita-Vazquez of Harrisburg. The crash was investigated by Lower Allen Township police.
