.
NARRATIVE:
On 04/08/2022, an unidentified driver was killed when a stolen Nissan Sentra crashed at Perris Boulevard and Cactus Avenue in Moreno Valley following a Menifee Police Department pursuit and continued efforts by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to apprehend the driver.
.
At approximately 11:54 a.m., deputies assigned to the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station received a broadcast from a Riverside County sheriff’s helicopter that it was following a stolen Nissan Sentra that had previously been pursued by Menifee police. Moreno Valley deputies responded toward Perris Boulevard and San Michele Road to intercept the vehicle.
.
The Nissan traveled north on Perris Boulevard in the opposing southbound traffic lanes at high speed. Near John F. Kennedy Avenue, it sideswiped another vehicle while moving through traffic. A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy positioned near the roadway deployed a spike strip. The Nissan struck the spikes but continued north on Perris Boulevard at high speed.
.
At Cactus Avenue, the Nissan entered the intersection against a red traffic signal and collided with the passenger side of an eastbound Toyota Tundra. The impact sent both vehicles into a cinder-block wall at the northeast corner of the intersection.
.
The Nissan’s driver, who was its sole occupant, suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene despite treatment by paramedics. The driver and passenger of the Tundra survived and were transported to a hospital for treatment.
.
At the request of the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station, the California Highway Patrol Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team assumed responsibility for investigating the fatal collision. Contemporary reporting specifically stated that authorities were withholding the deceased driver’s identity pending further investigation and notification of next of kin.
.
The available verified public reporting does not provide the pursuit’s maximum speed, total distance or duration. It also does not identify the Menifee officers who initiated the pursuit, the Riverside County sheriff’s deputy who deployed the spike strip, or the other deputies involved.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Menifee Police Department and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department did not publicly identify the officers who initiated or participated in the pursuit in the verified public sources located.
