NARRATIVE:
On 10/16/2022, an unidentified migrant was killed when an overloaded Ford F-150 carrying migrants crashed on FM 755 in Brooks County during an encounter with a Brooks County Sheriff's Office deputy. A second passenger subsequently died at a hospital, and 12 other occupants were injured.

The encounter occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. Sheriff Benny Martinez said a deputy was parked alongside FM 755 when a Ford F-150 and Ford Excursion passed at high speed. The deputy turned around to go after the vehicles. Texas DPS accounts described the deputy as attempting to stop the F-150 for a traffic violation, after which the driver continued away and a high-speed chase followed.

Both vehicles subsequently crashed in an area locally known as “Dead Man’s Curve.” The F-150 rolled over and struck a gas pipeline, while the Excursion crashed head-on into a tree. The pickup contained 14 migrants from Mexico and Guatemala. One passenger died at the scene.

Emergency personnel transported the injured occupants to hospitals in Kingsville, Alice and Edinburg. A second passenger from the pickup subsequently died at Christus Spohn Hospital in Kingsville. Twelve other occupants were injured. Additional migrants reportedly emerged from the surrounding brush the following day and required medical treatment.

The driver of the pickup left the crash scene and was not immediately apprehended. Texas DPS investigated the fatal crash, while the Brooks County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Security Investigations investigated the human-smuggling operation.
