On January 31, 2023, at approximately 11:59 AM, Omaha Police Department officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man with a gun at the Target store located at 17810 W Center Road. Joseph Jones, 32, entered the store armed with an AR-15-style rifle and fired several rounds, causing shoppers and employees to flee or seek shelter.

Officer Brian Vanderheiden of the Omaha Police Department arrived at the store, encountered Jones, and opened fire, killing him. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the incident.
