OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/22/2023, at approximately 9:16 a.m., Bath Township Police Department officers responded to 4862 1/2 Clark Road for a welfare check on 40-year-old Nathaniel Henry Ross. Officers attempted repeatedly to communicate with Ross inside the residence but were unsuccessful.

Police reported that gunfire subsequently came from the residence toward the area where officers were positioned. Police established a perimeter, closed Clark Road between Watson Road and Chandler Road, and directed nearby residents and Bath Community Schools to shelter in place.

The Clinton County Special Operations Team responded during the ensuing standoff. Police continued attempting to deal with Ross while he remained barricaded inside the residence.

Hours into the standoff, officers observed smoke and fire coming from the residence. Police said firefighters could not immediately approach the burning structure because of the continuing danger associated with the armed standoff. The residence ultimately burned and was considered a total loss.

After the fire was extinguished and investigators were able to enter the remains of the residence, Ross was found dead inside. The investigation determined that he had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the police standoff.
