OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/24/2023, a Hancock County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop 52-year-old Allan A. Van Reijsen, a local animal control officer, on Flye Point Road in Brooklin. During the traffic stop, Van Reijsen displayed a firearm and remained inside his vehicle, prompting deputies to establish a perimeter and request additional law enforcement resources, including a tactical team.
Officers negotiated with Van Reijsen for approximately seven hours while he remained barricaded inside his vehicle. During the standoff, a single gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle. After officers approached, they found Van Reijsen dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No officers fired their weapons during the incident.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit investigated the incident. Authorities later confirmed that Van Reijsen died by suicide.
