On January 31, 2024, Stamford Police Department officers located Lawrence Byrd on Canal Street following an alert from Ramapo police in New York. Byrd had allegedly killed his former domestic partner, Rosezella Munroe, at her residence in Hillcrest, Rockland County, New York, earlier that day. Munroe, 56, had previously reported multiple incidents of domestic violence involving Byrd, including harassment and unauthorized entry into her home.

When officers approached Byrd for arrest, he produced a firearm and fatally shot himself. Stamford Police officers administered CPR, but Byrd was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.
