On January 10, 2024, Alexander Staal, 51, was wanted for multiple felony charges involving stalking, breaking in, and battery of a former partner several days prior. Deputies from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office located him in the 800 block of East Prospect Road in Oakland Park, Florida.

Deputies made numerous attempts to persuade Staal to surrender peacefully. By approximately 2:47 p.m., deputies engaged in action during which they opened fire, killing Staal. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots during the incident, noting that a BMW SUV at the scene was riddled with bullet holes in its windshield. It is unknown whether Staal posed a threat to police.

Three deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative assignment, as is standard procedure. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is leading the investigation into the incident.
