On April 6, 2024, at approximately 8:45 p.m., Cedar Rapids Police Department officers responded to reports of a man with a gun near 31st Street NE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

According to police accounts, Vanderhamm allegedly raised the firearm in the direction of officers, and officers opened fire. Vanderhamm was struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at the location.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department stated that body camera footage captured the encounter. The footage and evidence have been handed over to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for independent review. Findings will be reviewed by the Linn County Attorney's Office to determine if the officers' actions were legally justified.
