On June 27, 2024, at approximately 9:20 p.m., North Branch Police Department officers responded to a report of an intoxicated and suicidal woman, identified as 36-year-old Jamie Ann Crabtree, walking near the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Elm Street while carrying a bottle of alcohol and a handgun in a case. Officers confronted Crabtree and claimed she did not acknowledge their commands to drop the weapon. Officer Kyle Miller then fired PepperBall rounds. According to squad car camera footage, Crabtree appeared to point an object at the officers. Officer Duane Southworth opened fire with his rifle multiple times, striking Crabtree. She was pronounced dead at Lakes Region Emergency Medical Services.
