OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On March 25, 2024, at approximately 2:46 p.m., employees at Victory Motors, located at 2701 Falls Avenue in Waterloo, Iowa, reported that a neighbor, identified as 41-year-old John Piazza, had pointed a gun at an employee's face and fired a round at the property. Piazza allegedly stated he would return with a rifle.

Waterloo Police Department officers responded to Piazza's residence at 1204 Hartman Avenue, situated behind Victory Motors. Officers observed him near the window of the residence with a long gun. Piazza allegedly pointed the firearm out of a window toward the officers. An officer opened fire, striking Piazza through the window. Officers entered the residence and found Piazza deceased.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was requested to investigate the officer-involved shooting. Upon completion, the DCI will forward the results of the investigation to the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office for review.
