OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 22, 2024, Goshen Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Huron Street. Elisha Smith, 36, was armed and had fatally shot a woman, later identified as his estranged partner. Smith locked himself in the residence, leading to a standoff with police.

The Elkhart County SWAT team was deployed to the scene. Officers established a perimeter and attempted negotiations with Smith. Despite hours of communication efforts, Smith refused to surrender. Shortly after midnight, a gunshot was heard from inside the residence. SWAT officers breached the home and discovered Smith deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

During the breach, SWAT officers also located the body of the female victim, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds earlier in the evening. No law enforcement personnel discharged their weapons during the incident.

The Indiana State Police are leading an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Findings will be reviewed by the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office.
