On November 8, 2024, at approximately 10:45 p.m., the Grand Rapids Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man waving a "gun-shaped object" near Trinity Health Grand Rapids. Officers arrived at the scene and encountered 38-year-old Henry Wymer, who allegedly pointed the object at officers. In response, three officers discharged their firearms, fatally wounding Wymer. Chief Eric Winstrom indicated that Wymer had a known history of mental health issues, which were known to police. By the date of this update, police have not identified the object he was reportedly holding and it is unknown whether he was armed or not.
