On 12/22/2021, officers from the Albion Department of Public Safety attempted to pull over Brian Douglas Laxton for driving without license plates on his vehicle. Laxton fled the scene, leading to a high-speed chase westbound on Interstate 94. During the pursuit, Laxton allegedly fired shots at pursuing officers. The chase concluded when a Calhoun County deputy executed a maneuver to stop Laxton's car by ramming into it. Laxton then fled on foot, armed with a handgun, and attempted to enter an occupied home near Oak Hill Drive and Willow Street in Battle Creek. Officer Christof Klein of the Battle Creek Police Department ordered Laxton to drop the weapon, but Laxton turned towards Klein with the gun, prompting Klein to shoot and kill him.
