OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On January 6, 2025, at approximately 5:15 p.m., an off-duty Fulton County Sheriff's deputy, Lieutenant Gerald Johnson, was flagged down by employees of Easy Rental in the 600 block of Lee Street, Atlanta, Georgia, following an armed robbery. Robert Douglas Smith, 42, was allegedly armed with a rifle. Lieutenant Johnson confronted Smith and engaged him in a shootout. Smith was fatally shot and pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital. Lieutenant Johnson sustained a non-life-threatening injury to his right hand and was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
