On 05/10/2025, around 1:30 a.m., Cushing police attempted a traffic stop when they noticed a firearm in the vehicle driven by Curtis Russell. Russell refused to provide identification and continued driving. Officers pursued him through Cushing and into Lincoln County. A deputy later located Russell at a rural property at East 790 Road and 3500 Road. Russell exited the vehicle, ordered the deputy to leave, and fired at him. The deputy retreated and called for backup. Russell continued shooting when Oklahoma Highway Patrol and other officers arrived. Troopers opened fire and killed him.
