On 06/15/2025 at approximately 2:12 a.m., Owyhee County deputies responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 28000 block of Hyde Street in Bruneau. Deputy John Smith encountered a man who was suffering a mental health crisis and had a rifle. The man allegedly moved toward the deputy. Deputy Smith shot and killed him in the street. No officers were Injured. The Idaho Critical Incident Task Force and Canyon County Sheriff are investigating. Deputy Smith has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome.
