Deputies stopped a yellow Corvette for illegal window tinting near NW 62nd Street and NW 22nd Avenue on June 17, 2025 around 5:15 p.m. The driver, Laboy, refused to pull over and drove away. The Miami‑Dade Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit tracked the vehicle and guided deputies to a dead‑end apartment complex at NW 84th Street and NW Fourth Court. Laboy exited the vehicle carrying a gun and advanced toward the deputies who were in unmarked cars and plainclothes. Deputy Kelvin Cox shot Laboy once, killing him at the parking lot. Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue pronounced Laboy dead. Laboy’s family told WSVN he called his father, panicked and fearing for his life, saying “come save me, I’m being chased, and I don’t know by whom." This detail is a major source of family criticism, as they claim Laboy was scared and confused, not realizing they were police, and that he called his father panicking before he was shot. Deputy Cox was placed on administrative leave. This was the third fatal shooting by Deputy Cox.
