On 08/11/2022, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a residence in Victorville where Byron Hayes was barricaded and reportedly armed. Hayes was wanted for murder and threatened to shoot at officers or himself. After a prolonged standoff and failed negotiations, deputies engaged Hayes and opened fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the incident and concluded that the deputies acted lawfully under use-of-force policy.
