OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

Fire crews responded to a vehicle crash around 6:39 p.m. on the 600 block of Charles Street, near North Rowan Elementary School. Firefighters requested police assistance. Sgt. Tyler A. Lewis of the East Spencer Police Department arrived and encountered Jesse Duane Soderstrom, 45, who was reportedly armed with a hammer and acting aggressively. During the confrontation, Sgt. Lewis shot Soderstrom. He was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center and died of his injuries. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the case. Sgt. Lewis was placed on leave and later cleared by an internal review.
