On 08/08/2023, Polk County deputies and SWAT units responded to Christina Animal Hospital at 6800 Church Avenue North in Mulberry while searching for Marquis Lynn Baker, 45, who was wanted out of Jacksonville. Baker barricaded himself inside the building, prompting an hours-long standoff. Deputies established a perimeter and attempted negotiations. During the confrontation with law enforcement outside, Baker shot himself with a .40 caliber firearm. He died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities reported one .40 S&W firearm was involved. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing the incident.
