On 07/29/2021, Lawrence police attempted to stop a vehicle occupied by several juveniles. The driver refused to stop and police escalated a chase that continued for about 15 minutes at very high speed, leaving Lawrence and entering Boone County. No PIT maneuvers were reported. The driver lost control on State Road 32 near County Road 650 East and crashed into a tree. The 14-year-old driver died at the scene. Four additional juveniles in the vehicle were injured.
