On 08/16/2021, officers attempted a traffic stop on a 2014 Kia Forte near 1900 block of US 321 Business South in Newton. The driver pulled over then fled. The pursuit traveled through Maiden and Lincolnton. The vehicle lost control, crashed into a concrete bridge guardrail and caught fire. Kyle Alan Wagner was pulled from the vehicle but died from his injuries en route to hospital.
