On 12/19/2025 officers and state agents were searching for Amos L. Matthews after he reportedly fired at law enforcement in the Opp area and fled into nearby woods. Matthews, who had felony warrants, was located on a front porch on Childre Court. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, he brandished a firearm and attempted to flee, and officers fired at him, killing him at the scene. Investigators from ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation are reviewing the incident before submitting findings to the Covington County District Attorney’s Office.
