On 11/26/2022, Johnny Lee Nichols, 51, of Moss Point, who was wanted on an attempted murder warrant related to an earlier stabbing incident in Marion County, contacted the Moss Point Police Department indicating he intended to turn himself in. When an officer met Nichols near 2nd Street Park, Nichols was armed with a firearm. Officers attempted to verbally persuade him to disarm, but Nichols then shot himself. He was taken to Singing River Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
