On 12/31/2025, Independence Police officers identified a vehicle reported stolen and attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop, and officers initiated a pursuit that continued from Independence into Kansas City. During the pursuit, the fleeing vehicle entered the intersection of E. 9th Street and Benton Boulevard and collided with another vehicle. Daniel Perez Sanchez, 47, who was not involved in the pursuit, was killed in the crash. Several additional people were injured. The Independence Police Department initiated the pursuit, and the crash remains under investigation.
