On March 14, 2016, First Sergeant Joseph George Portaro, a 50-year-old veteran of the West Virginia State Police, suffered a fatal medical emergency during a physical fitness training session near the West Virginia State Police Academy in Institute, West Virginia. Serving as the Deputy Director of Training at the academy, Sergeant Portaro was participating in a routine jog when he collapsed. He was promptly transported to Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston, where he was pronounced dead.
