OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 12/15/2024, Charlotte County Sheriff's Corporal Elio Diaz conducted a traffic stop at a Chevron gas station in the 3000 block of Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte, Florida. Diaz was transported to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. The individual involved was later located at a Popeyes restaurant in Punta Gorda. He reportedly reached for a rifle, and a deputy opened fire, shooting him in the head. He was airlifted to a hospital and pronounced dead.
