OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On January 15, 2025, Brazoria County Sheriff's Deputy Jesus "Jesse" Vargas, a 17-year veteran of the department, was fatally shot while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in southwest Houston. Deputy Vargas, who was part of the U.S. Marshal's Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force, was approaching 56-year-old Robert Lee Davis near a Dollar Tree store on Stella Link Road when Davis opened fire, striking Deputy Vargas in the head. Deputy Vargas was transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Davis fled the scene, prompting an extensive manhunt. He was later located hiding in a dumpster by a U.S. Marshals K-9 unit. During the apprehension, Davis shot and wounded the K-9 before officers returned fire, resulting in Davis's death.
