On February 16, 2025, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Deputy William "Bill" Smith, a 45-year-old veteran of the Holt County Sheriff's Office, was involved in a fatal single-vehicle crash on Highway 275 near Mile Marker 48, close to Neligh, Nebraska. Deputy Smith was en route to assist another deputy with a reported domestic disturbance when his patrol vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
