On March 16, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m., off-duty Randolph Police Sergeant Scott Sherman was fatally struck by an MBTA commuter rail train at the Birch Street railroad crossing in Abington. The train's crossing gates, lights, and bells were functioning at the time, and it was traveling below the 70-mph speed limit. Authorities have not disclosed whether Sherman was on foot or in a vehicle when he was hit.
