OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On February 21, 2025, around 11:30 p.m., Virginia Beach Police Officer Cameron Girvin and Officer Christopher Reese conducted a traffic stop in the Green Run neighborhood. The driver, John McCoy III, became combative, exited the vehicle, and engaged in a struggle with the officers before drawing a pistol. McCoy shot both officers and then shot them again while they were on the ground. McCoy later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officer Reese died shortly after midnight. Officer Girvin died at 4:30 a.m. on February 22.
