OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On March 8, 2025, at approximately 7:10 p.m., off-duty Chickamauga Police Officer Charles "Chuck" Dunn was present at a residence on Wood Station Road in Rock Spring, Georgia, when 54-year-old Russell David Payne arrived and began shooting into the home. Payne fatally shot his estranged wife, 54-year-old Jacklyn D. Payne, and her father, 79-year-old Eugene "Jack" Denny. Officer Dunn, a longtime family friend, attempted to intervene and was critically injured during the confrontation. Payne subsequently died by suicide at the scene. Officer Dunn was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on March 13, 2025. The Walker County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the incident.
