On June 5, 2025, around 4:53 p.m., Bernie Police Lieutenant Eddie Mays responded to a domestic disturbance call on West Crumb Avenue. While attempting to arrest a man, Mays collapsed and died at the scene from an apparent medical emergency. The man was taken into custody and transported to the Stoddard County Jail. The Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control is conducting the investigation.
