On 11/27/2025 Deputy Caleb Smith was off duty at a home in Waggaman during an argument with his brother. The confrontation escalated and his brother shot him. Deputies and EMS responded and Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother was taken into custody and charged with second degree murder.

On 11/27/2025, Specialist Sarah Diane Beckstrom of the West Virginia Army National Guard died after being shot while assigned to duty in Washington, D.C. On 11/26/2025, she and another Guardsman were positioned near the Farragut Square Metro Station when a man approached and opened fire. Both service members were struck. Beckstrom was transported to a hospital and died from her injuries the following day. Federal prosecutors charged a 29-year-old man in D.C. On 11/21/2025, deputies from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and a locksmith responded to a home in the Bermuda Club community to serve an eviction notice requested by the suspect’s mother. The suspect, Michael Halberstam, opened fire from inside the residence, killing Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, injuring another deputy in the shoulder and critically wounding the locksmith. Officers returned fire and struck Halberstam. He later died from his injuries. The call was described as a standard eviction service call.

On 11/17/2025, James Hurley Edwards died by apparent suicide inside the Federal Detention Center Miami while awaiting sentencing on federal charges involving the production and possession of child sexual abuse material. Edwards had been found alone on a top bunk and was unresponsive. His attorney reported that Edwards had communicated with him electronically earlier that morning without any indication of suicidal intent. On 11/17/2025 at approximately 7:53 a.m., Corrections Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall was working at the River North Correctional Center when he was attacked by an inmate. Hall was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Two additional officers were injured during the incident and have since been released from the hospital. On 09/28/2025, Sgt. Scott Heimann, 32, was shot while responding to a domestic violence call in Hays, Kansas. The call originated after a woman reported that her partner had rammed her vehicle while she attempted to flee. On 09/27/2025, Gwinnett County Deputy Tamara Tuitt-Bartlett was shot and killed in a domestic-related incident at a townhouse in the Villages at Shakerag subdivision in Johns Creek, Forsyth County. Her teenage son was also shot multiple times but survived after fleeing to a neighbor’s house for help. Responding officers found Tuitt-Bartlett dead in an upstairs room. The shooter, identified as Eric Sumner, fled the scene and was later captured in Monroe County following a chase on Interstate 75. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault with intent to murder, and multiple firearm offenses. Tuitt-Bartlett had served nearly 20 years with the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.

On 09/24/2025, 40-year-old recruit Franklin Leinen collapsed during physical training at the Broken Arrow Police Academy. Instructors began CPR and paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:30 p.m. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation, and an autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.
