LAPD Sergeant Matthew Paul Landry, 43, was struck and killed on the 405 Freeway near Del Amo Boulevard while off-duty. Landry and another motorist were reportedly involved in a prior collision and standing outside their vehicles when a third vehicle crashed into them. Both men died at the scene. A funeral service was held in Covina to honor Landry’s service.

On Thursday evening, June 26, 2025, Officer Kendall Corder and his partner responded to a domestic violence call near 25th Street and Garfield Avenue. As they exited their squad car, they were ambushed and shot in an alleyway. Officer Corder sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was placed on life support. He died from his injuries on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

On 06/27/2025, around 9:28 p.m., Deputy Brandon Gaede, 30, with the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a report of illegal fireworks at a residence on 1st Street in Phillipsburg, Kansas. While attempting to arrest 27-year-old Kolton Griffith, a struggle broke out. Griffith produced a concealed handgun and shot Deputy Gaede. Gaede returned fire, killing Griffith. Deputy Gaede was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.

On 06/27/2025 at approximately 7:00 p.m., a Wilkes County deputy, Johnathan Andrew Laws, 34, was driving a 2018 Nissan Altima southbound on Red White and Blue Road when it was struck head-on by a northbound 2003 Jeep Liberty that crossed the center line. Laws was airlifted to a hospital but died from his injuries.

LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng, 53, was fatally struck by a vehicle on the southbound 405 Freeway near Getty Center Drive around 2:00 a.m. He had stopped to assist with a prior two-vehicle crash and activated his emergency lights. After exiting his vehicle, he was hit by a third vehicle and later died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. A civilian involved in the original crash also died. Authorities closed southbound lanes of the 405 for nearly 10 hours.

On Sunday morning, June 22, 2025 at approximately 5:58 a.m., off‑duty Trenton Police Officer Timothy Long was involved in a single‑vehicle crash on northbound I‑295 near mile marker 45 in Westampton Township, Burlington County. His vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a traffic sign and a tree, and caught fire. Officer Long sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Long served 25 years with the Trenton Police Department and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Flags in Trenton have been lowered in his honor, and the New Jersey State Police is investigating the crash.

On June 22, 2025, Sgt. Beverly Rodriguez, 40, of the Metro Transit Police Department, was found dead in White Bear Lake after going overboard from a pontoon boat while off duty. The incident occurred near the east side of the lake around 2:27 p.m. Emergency responders arrived on scene and recovered her body approximately 40 minutes later. She was transported to Regions Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating. Rodriguez served since 2017 and led the Metro Transit Homeless Action Team, where she was known for her compassionate work with the unhoused.

On June 22, 2025, an officer with the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department was killed in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash. The officer was riding along Hood Road when he lost control of the bike and struck a tree. The impact split the motorcycle in half. He was pronounced dead at the scene. On Monday, 06/02/2025, Apache Junction officers stopped a 37-year-old male—later identified as Roger Nunez—for a reported road‑rage incident near Ironwood Drive and Elliott Road. The driver initially complied but when asked to exit the vehicle, he became aggressive, retrieved a handgun from the glove compartment, and exited the car. Her partner Carlos A. Baker claims that he tripped and his gun accidentally discharged which hit her in the back and killed her. She was initially transported by squad car, but the vehicle crashed and caught fire. She was transferred to another vehicle and taken to the hospital, where she died less than an hour after being shot. Police have described the car fire as due to a mechanical issue/malfunction. No further technical cause has been made public. Chicago Police have not publicly provided a specific reason beyond “fellow officers rushed her.” Cook County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide. One detail prosecutors put on the record: Rivera’s partner lost his footing, and his weapon accidentally discharged. Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating. Rivera’s mother and the family’s attorney, Antonio Romanucci, are publicly questioning CPD’s narrative, saying it doesn’t “pass the smell test,” and are demanding release of all body- and dash-cam along with an independent (Illinois State Police) investigation. Officer Carlos Baker is in the news weeks later for a new incident. Allegations: A 29-year-old off-duty female CPD officer says she was waiting for a rideshare when a man and a woman approached, demanded she delete “videos” she had taken in the bar, and then beat her in the face. She needed stitches for a split lip. The police report identifies the man as Officer Carlos Baker who shot Rivera. COPA is investigating. According to the victim’s statement in the police report, no — he didn’t know she was a Chicago police officer.

Officer Baker has more than a dozen misconduct complaints on his record including at least 3 past suspensions and 2 reprimands which are detailed in the enclosed link. Despite this history, he had been assigned to an aggressive tactical team. Officer Baker is on paid leave and not in custody.

On June 5, 2025, around 4:53 p.m., Bernie Police Lieutenant Eddie Mays responded to a domestic disturbance call on West Crumb Avenue. While attempting to arrest a man, Mays collapsed and died at the scene from an apparent medical emergency. The man was taken into custody and transported to the Stoddard County Jail. On June 3, 2025, Sergeant Manuel Edwards, 55, of the Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, was fatally struck by a U-Haul truck while riding his bicycle on Gaston Road in Katy, Texas. The incident occurred around 8:12 a.m. Edwards was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Sergeant Edwards began his law enforcement career in 2006 as a detention officer with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.He joined the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office in 2008 and transferred to Precinct 2 in May 2021. In 2023, he was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the Toll Road Division. Known for his joyful personality and dedication to his family, Edwards was remembered by colleagues as the epitome of a family man.

The department stated there was no danger to the public. The station was closed June 3 to allow officers to grieve. Officers from nearby jurisdictions handled patrols temporarily. Around 9:05 p.m., officers from the Paynesville Police Department, Cold Spring Police Department, and the Stearns County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic assault at Alstead's residence on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered Alstead's wife, who had visible, non-life-threatening injuries to her head and neck. She informed the officers that Alstead had assaulted her and was armed with a handgun in the basement.As officers attempted to arrest Alstead, he appeared at the bottom of the basement stairs holding a handgun. Stearns County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Orvis, a 23-year law enforcement veteran, discharged his firearm twice. Alstead then fired a single, self-inflicted gunshot. Despite officers' efforts to provide medical aid, Alstead was pronounced dead in his home. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that while Alstead sustained multiple gunshot injuries, his death resulted from the self-inflicted wound. A handgun and shell casings were recovered at the scene, and all involved officers were equipped with body cameras during the incident.

Larry Alstead had been a retired MSP state trooper with a long career in law enforcement, serving 32 years with the Minnesota State Patrol before retiring in 1999.

On May 30, 2025, Hudson County Sheriff's Officer Justin Rivera, 29, fell from a ninth-story window of the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City around 9:30 a.m. The building was closed to the public due to a power outage at the time. Eyewitnesses heard windows breaking before he fell out. Rivera was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. The preliminary investigation suggests an accidental fall.

On 05/19/2025, Deputy Daniel V. Chavira, 21, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was killed in a three-vehicle collision at approximately 3:17 p.m. on San Francisquito Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. Chavira, who had just completed a double shift at the North County Correctional Facility, was off duty and driving home when the crash occurred. On the morning of May 18, 2025, Laredo police responded to a report of an unresponsive man holding a firearm at a residence on the 8000 block of Milo Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 53-year-old male deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The individual was identified as an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer. CBP confirmed the death and stated that their Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the matter. The Laredo Police Department is conducting the ongoing investigation.

On 05/16/2025, Scott Alan Farmer, a 58-year-old former law enforcement officer, was involved in a fatal incident in Oregon City. Farmer, who served with the Canby Police Department from 2002 to 2022 and previously with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office from 2000 to 2002, called a police emergency line stating his intent to harm himself. Officers responded to his residence on Clairmont Way around 5 a.m. Upon arrival, Farmer exited the home armed with a loaded firearm. Despite commands to disarm, he fired five shots at an Oregon City police officer, who returned fire with three shots, striking Farmer in the hip. As Farmer lay on the ground, he apologized for shooting at the officer before turning the gun on himself, resulting in his death. The officer involved was uninjured and has been placed on critical incident leave.

On May 2, 2025, longtime Burke County first responder Sput Powell was killed in a crash when a FedEx truck pulled into the path of his pickup truck on Highway 181 in the Oak Hill community near Morganton, North Carolina.

Deputy Brandon Sikes, 51, of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed on April 26, 2025, during a traffic stop along Interstate 20 near Exit 194. Deputies attempted to serve a temporary protective order to James Blake Montgomery, 38, who initially appeared cooperative but then opened fire with a fully automatic 9mm AR pistol. Sikes was struck and killed during the gunfire. Deputy Gavin White was critically injured. The suspect fled in an RV, crashed, and was later found dead inside. Bomb-making materials, firearms, and pipe bombs were discovered in the vehicle. The shooting is under investigation.

On April 25, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Officer Sam Lively of the Tyler Police Department was traveling southbound on Troup Highway on his motorcycle. As he approached the intersection with East Southeast Loop 323, another vehicle traveling in the inside lane changed lanes into the outside lane, striking Officer Lively's motorcycle. The collision caused Officer Lively to be ejected from his motorcycle. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Officer Lively had recently graduated from the police academy and had been sworn into the department for five months. An autopsy was ordered, and a memorial escort was held for the officer as he was transferred to a Lindale funeral home. ​

On April 23, 2025, deputies from the Clark County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an occupied residential burglary in the 9000 block of NE 79th Street in Vancouver, Washington. The caller reported a male subject inside the residence, who then fled the scene on foot.​

During a search of the area, law enforcement officers discovered a vehicle nearby with a deceased individual inside, matching the description of the suspect. The individual was identified as Charles “Rob” Gardiner, the Interim Chief of the Cowlitz Tribal Public Safety Department. Evidence suggests that Gardiner died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit is actively investigating the incident, including the circumstances surrounding Gardiner's presence at the residence.​

On April 22, 2025, around 12:30 p.m., Dawson County Sheriff's Deputy Jessie Perez, 42, was conducting a traffic stop on West U.S. Highway 180 near North Avenue V in Lamesa, Texas. During the stop, a passing commercial vehicle threw debris that struck Perez. He was transported to Lamesa Medical Arts Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. Perez had been with the department for eight months and also served as a city council member in O'Donnell and as a firefighter and EMS member. The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

On April 15, 2025, Lieutenant Helio Garcia of the South Fulton Police Department was killed in a head-on collision while on duty. Garcia was driving his patrol vehicle eastbound on Flat Shoals Road near Connell Road when his vehicle was hit head on by a car. Garcia was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and died.

On 04/10/2025, 34-year-old Officer Malissa Torres of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 18th District, was found fatally shot in a first-floor restroom at the station on 1160 N. Larrabee St. in Chicago’s Near North Side around 2:30 a.m. The wound was ruled an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Her colleagues described her as warm, caring, deeply proud of her young son, and a valued member of the CAPS unit.
