On Monday, 06/02/2025, Apache Junction officers stopped a 37-year-old male—later identified as Roger Nunez—for a reported road‑rage incident near Ironwood Drive and Elliott Road. The driver initially complied but when asked to exit the vehicle, he became aggressive, retrieved a handgun from the glove compartment, and exited the car. Officers deployed pepper‑ball munitions, which had no effect. The driver then fired four shots, striking Officer Gabriel Facio in the face. Fellow officers returned fire, wounding the suspect. Officer Facio was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and died on Sunday, 06/08/2025, at approximately 1:00 p.m. He is survived by his wife, children, parents, and a grandchild.
