OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/02/2025, California Highway Patrol Officer Miguel Cano, 34, was driving a patrol SUV in Culver City while on duty with a partner when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree near Bristol Parkway and Green Valley Circle. The patrol team had earlier made an arrest for suspected DUI and were transporting the person at the time of the crash. Cano reported feeling ill shortly before the vehicle lost control. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that Cano had fentanyl in his system at the time of the crash, though it was not able to determine how or when the substance entered his system. The manner of death was certified as accidental. Cano was transported to a hospital after the crash where he died from his injuries. His partner and the person in custody suffered minor injuries.
