Deputy Mason was shot and killed. The second deputy was injured and hospitalized in stable condition. The shooter was also killed by police. On 06/27/2025, around 9:28 p.m., Deputy Brandon Gaede, 30, with the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a report of illegal fireworks at a residence on 1st Street in Phillipsburg, Kansas. While attempting to arrest 27-year-old Kolton Griffith, a struggle broke out. Griffith produced a concealed handgun and shot Deputy Gaede. Gaede returned fire, killing Griffith. On Sunday morning, June 22, 2025 at approximately 5:58 a.m., off‑duty Trenton Police Officer Timothy Long was involved in a single‑vehicle crash on northbound I‑295 near mile marker 45 in Westampton Township, Burlington County. His vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a traffic sign and a tree, and caught fire. Officer Long sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Long served 25 years with the Trenton Police Department and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Flags in Trenton have been lowered in his honor, and the New Jersey State Police is investigating the crash.

Officer Krystal Rivera, a 36-year-old mother and four-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was fatally shot on June 5, 2025, during a foot pursuit in a residential area. While attempting to stop a person, the man ran into a building. Officers followed and encountered armed individuals. During the confrontation, Rivera was shot and later died at the hospital. Her partner Carlos A. Baker claims that he tripped and his gun accidentally discharged which hit her in the back and killed her. Instead of immediately calling 911 and requesting emergency medical assistance, Baker and another officer, Jon Hein, placed Rivera into a police vehicle and drove her toward a hospital. The vehicle crashed and caught fire. Still without an ambulance, she was transferred to yet another police vehicle and taken to the hospital, where she died less than an hour after being shot. Police have described the car fire as due to a mechanical issue/malfunction. No further technical cause has been made public. Chicago Police have not publicly provided a specific reason beyond “fellow officers rushed her.” Cook County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide. One detail prosecutors put on the record: Rivera’s partner lost his footing, and his weapon accidentally discharged.

Officer Carlos Baker is in the news weeks later for a new incident. Allegations: A 29-year-old off-duty female CPD officer says she was waiting for a rideshare when a man and a woman approached, demanded she delete “videos” she had taken in the bar, and then beat her in the face. She needed stitches for a split lip. The police report identifies the man as Officer Carlos Baker who shot Rivera. COPA is investigating.

Officer Baker has more than a dozen misconduct complaints on his record including at least 3 past suspensions and 2 reprimands which are detailed in the enclosed link. Despite this history, he had been assigned to an aggressive tactical team. Officer Baker is on paid leave and not in custody. Subsequent reporting revealed that Rivera and Baker had been involved in a secret romantic relationship while both were serving as officers with the Chicago Police Department. Rivera had recently ended the relationship and had threatened to disclose it to Baker’s other girlfriend. At the same time, Baker was reportedly angry about not receiving a promotion he believed he deserved. These personal and professional stressors are now being examined as possible contributing factors in the shooting.

The fact that Rivera was shot in the back has become a major point of scrutiny for investigators and the family’s attorneys. Prosecutors and oversight bodies are examining not only the shooting itself but also the actions taken afterward, including the failure to immediately summon emergency medical services and the handling of the scene.

Rivera’s mother and the family’s attorney, Antonio Romanucci, are publicly questioning CPD’s narrative, saying it doesn’t “pass the smell test,” and are demanding release of all body- and dash-cam along with an independent (Illinois State Police) investigation. A judge has temporarily blocked public release of some video and records while related criminal cases proceed. On 06/02/2025, an Upper Providence Township Police Department officer took his own life in the parking lot of the township campus, according to a department statement. The police station was closed the next day to allow officers time to mourn and mutual aid patrols covered township patrol duties. Christian Flynn, 29, a full-time officer with the department, died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on duty.

Around 9:05 p.m., officers from the Paynesville Police Department, Cold Spring Police Department, and the Stearns County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic assault at Alstead's residence on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered Alstead's wife, who had visible, non-life-threatening injuries to her head and neck. She informed the officers that Alstead had assaulted her and was armed with a handgun in the basement.As officers attempted to arrest Alstead, he appeared at the bottom of the basement stairs holding a handgun. Stearns County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Orvis, a 23-year law enforcement veteran, discharged his firearm twice. Alstead then fired a single, self-inflicted gunshot. Despite officers' efforts to provide medical aid, Alstead was pronounced dead in his home. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that while Alstead sustained multiple gunshot injuries, his death resulted from the self-inflicted wound. A handgun and shell casings were recovered at the scene, and all involved officers were equipped with body cameras during the incident.

Larry Alstead had been a retired MSP state trooper with a long career in law enforcement, serving 32 years with the Minnesota State Patrol before retiring in 1999.

On 06/01/2025, Jonathan J.D. White, a 51-year-old sergeant with the Angleton Police Department in Angleton, Texas, was killed in the line of duty when he was struck by a vehicle while escorting a funeral procession. White had served with the department for 19 years in multiple roles, including as a leader in professional integrity and community programs. He was transported by air to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

On 06/01/2025, Timothy Ontiveros, a 33-year-old police officer with the Bloomfield Police Department in Bloomfield, New Mexico, died from gunshot wounds sustained during a traffic stop on May 26, 2025. Ontiveros conducted a routine stop when the driver refused to comply, and during the attempt to take the suspect into custody the driver opened fire, striking Ontiveros. A second officer returned fire, killing the suspect. Ontiveros was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he died days later from his injuries. He had served with the Bloomfield Police Department since December 2024 and previously worked with the Farmington Police Department; he also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Aztec Fire Department.

On 05/31/2025, Officer Samuel Riveros and another officer responded to a reported shooting at a residence in Baldwin Park. Upon arrival, they were immediately met with gunfire. Officer Riveros was shot and later died at a hospital.

On May 30, 2025, Hudson County Sheriff's Officer Justin Rivera, 29, fell from a ninth-story window of the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City around 9:30 a.m. The building was closed to the public due to a power outage at the time. Eyewitnesses heard windows breaking before he fell out. Rivera was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. The preliminary investigation suggests an accidental fall.

On 05/26/2025, Daniel Weston Sherrer, a 31-year-old deputy with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office in Marengo, Ohio, was killed in the line of duty when he was shot while responding to a reported domestic situation at a home on County Road 26. Sherrer arrived at the location in the evening and was struck by gunfire during the encounter. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Another responding officer wounded the suspect during the exchange and the suspect was taken into custody. Sherrer had served with the Sheriff’s Office since March 2021.
