Anderson “Chase” Childers, a 38-year-old former Georgia police officer and minor league baseball player, drowned after entering the water at Pawleys Island to rescue a group of swimmers caught in a rip current. He and another man helped save five people from the current, but Childers was pulled under before he could exit the water. Emergency responders recovered his body approximately 90 minutes later. His death occurred in front of his wife and three children.
