On August 27, 2025, 30-year-old NYPD officer Jay Peña was riding a motorcycle on the Brooklyn–Queens Expressway near Atlantic Avenue when he collided with a box truck. The driver of the truck fled the scene. Peña was killed in the crash. The driver was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash and operating an unregistered vehicle without a license plate.
