OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/28/2025, Sgt. Scott Heimann, 32, was shot while responding to a domestic violence call in Hays, Kansas. The call originated after a woman reported that her partner had rammed her vehicle while she attempted to flee. Law enforcement officers, including Heimann and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper, established a perimeter near the home. A single shot was fired from inside the residence, striking Heimann. He was transported to a hospital by air but later died from his injuries. The man, identified as Zane Wickham, barricaded himself inside the home. After a standoff involving gas munitions, drones, and negotiators, tactical teams entered the residence around 6:15 a.m. and found Wickham dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
