On 12/24/2024, 26-year-old Officer Ashlee Stoneburner of the West Yellowstone Police Department died by suicide near the Ruby Creek area south of Cameron, Montana, after a request for assistance was made late on Christmas Eve. The investigation by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office determined her death was a suicide. Stoneburner had served approximately three years with the department and held roles including taser instructor, field training officer, social media director, and school resource officer. Her passing sparked an outpouring of support within the community and a renewed emphasis on law-enforcement wellness and mental-health resources.
